We ask, What story do I want to tell, and why?
The workshop commits you to a set time every week, and a bunch of smart people who are in it with you. It's a brilliant way to get writing — and keep yourself writing.
HOW IT WORKS
At the core of What's the Story? is a group process designed to help you sort through the morass of information that is personal experience. You read out loud; we experience not only your words, but your affect, your heart if you will. And we mirror what we have experienced back to you, through the lens of the empathy and curiosity.
The response is designed to be utterly constructive; to give the writer what is useful: We tell you what draws us in; what questions we have, what we need to know.
Meanwhile, I pay close attention to you, help you name what is important to you, then I invite you to build on that.
What’s the Story? is a resource or tool at any point in the development of a project. People come with a full manuscript, a chapter, a few pages, or just an inkling that there’s something they need to write, or say out loud.
AND having a set time every week when you have a community to read to is a brilliant way to get and keep yourself writing.
VIRTUAL GROUP SESSIONS
Weekday workshops are ongoing. A Sunday afternoon session is currently enrolling.
The groups are intimate, with a maximum of six people. I recommend that you hide self view, so you're seeing only us on the screen.
During the group sessions, each writer presents ten to twelve minutes of material. I share the text, so people hear your voice, and can follow along. The group responds in a carefully guided, utterly constructive way, designed to help you see what it is you have written. Once I get a sense of what is important to you, I'll make suggestions about how to move forward, how to dig in. The better I get to know you and your work. the more robust my response will be. You'll build a team of collaborators who have knowledge of, and an investment in, your work.
PRIVATE SESSIONS
I still work with writers one-on-one. Depending on the project, I may suggest that you come to one or two group sessions, so I can hear how others respond to your work. That will give both a bigger sense of what is in the material (see HOW IT BEGAN, above). And if you're participating in the group sessions, there may come a time when one of us feels a private session would be beneficial, so we can talk about the work in a way we may not want to in front of the group.
IN-PERSON COACHING
I am currently based in Detroit, Michigan, and will start an in-person workshop here in the fall of 2025.
WEEKEND INTENSIVES IN LA, DETROIT, AND BUCK'S COUNTY, PENNSYLVANIA
A few times a year, we offer weekend intensives. It's a great way to for us to get to know one another, for you to get a taste of the group process — and get a jump start on that thing you've been wanting to write.
Let me know if that's something that would be of interest.
